South London duo Very Many Horses share their eclectic Centre Mass EP and it will have you listening on repeat.

Very Many Horses – Centre Mass EP

Centre Mass is a very modern EP discussing very modern concerns. Written and recorded over a couple of years mostly remotely it tackles a diverse range of themes spanning; family, creativity, loneliness, dependency on technology, resistance, adaptation and acceptance.

There is a real journey through this EP and you never quite know what to expect next, but at every step, it’s both satisfying and thrilling. The EP opens with The Sea which made me think of the ‘jingly-jangly’ indie pop of The Shins. There is a joyous swell to the harmonies, the track tells the tale of long-distance love and the longing that comes with it.

“The distance feels like an ocean, like the sea, wait for me.”

Track two ‘The Algorithm (Better Than Me)’ has a fraught edge to it “You know me better than me” goes the refrain and it perfectly encapsulates the anxieties of our time spent online and the flow of personal data. It’s a cathartic, riotous ride, that brings a wonderful edge to this EP. From the high energy of The Algorithm comes the beautifully melancholy and reflective “I Won’t Fall Far From Your Tree” which contemplates the relationship artists’ have with creativity, inspiration, loyalty and family. The EP closes out with Compadre which brings the EP to a suitably glorious conclusion. However, if you are like me, it also became the start as it’s very easy to go around again and again on this EP, and each time you’ll discover something new to admire.

“The Centre Mass EP is a wonderful collection of songs that perfectly soundtracks the realities of life, love and artist in a post-pandemic world.”

About Very Many Horses

Very Many Horses consists of Soth London duo Wes and Greg. The duo met previously while in the band Finger Pistols. After going their separate ways, fate brought them back together and via the wonders of the Internet they started working together again remotely. They have distinct roles in the project. Wes handles all the back-end production/mixing/mastering elements as well as singing, songwriting and playing guitar and keys. Meanwhile, Greg writes a lot, sings occasionally, plays guitar and handles everything to do with the band that isn’t actual music-making (i.e. social media, artwork, promotion etc).

Kinda Grizzly
