Tori BLK returns with a slice of nostalgic breakup pop.
Tori BLK – My Illusion
You won’t get through life without a few regrets. (Anyone who tells you they have none might be a bit of a psychopath.) And perhaps there are no regrets more haunting than the ones we hold about lost loves, the ones who got away. Still, it’s provided fuel for songwriting ever since the first caveman made a bone flute, and now Tori BLK joins the ranks with her enjoyably nostalgic track ‘My Illusion’.
Tori BLK is a singer, songwriter and producer based in Arizona. With an EP released last year, she’s keeping up consistent releases, with ‘My Illusion’ being the latest.
‘My Illusion’ is a mid-tempo breakup jam, full of regret and classic melodies with 80s influences.
The simple lyrics are full of the questions that are all too common after breakups – ‘Where should I be now?’ – and occasionally slip into self-pity, with thoughts like ‘I guess I was easy to forget all about’. But the chorus is more empowering, as BLK concedes that ‘I have to move on’. Her vocals sit somewhere between sweet, husky and raw, lending the track a genuine if unpolished edge. The melodies are familiar pop shapes, yet the chorus is instantly memorable and could provide some good sing-along fodder in a live setting.
The production has an 80s kick to it, bringing to mind acts like Cyndi Lauper and Donna Lewis, with stinging guitar lines, shimmering chords, and layered vocals. The pulsing synths and sharp drumbeats with finger-snaps keep it from dragging, and there are some strong vocal harmonies. There’s also a hint of singer-songwriters like Pink in the raw delivery. Fans of classic pop will find something to enjoy here.
