Tizane’s latest track is a headstrong pondering of lost love.
Tizane – Off The Edge
‘Off the Edge’ is the latest single from Dartford dark-pop artist Tizane. The track is the first of several singles due for release over the next few months and will feature on her forthcoming album, ‘Forever is Nothing’. Her debut album ‘Cherry’ arrived at the start of last year and garnered praise for its ability to combine emotive lyrics with big hooks. Her new single – produced by ex-Vibrator Pat Collier, who has worked with a host of big hitters including The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream and X-Ray Spex – follows very much in the same vein.
The track starts off with gentle and melodious cascading guitar washing down to create a dreamy almost psychedelic mood, with Tizane’s lilting vocals as the voice of reason in her head rationalising and processing the fact that she has lost out on love to someone else:
“That perfume hypnotised you and those brown eyes melt you inside”. It is very much the same “self-deprecating take on sadness” that Phoebe Bridgers has as her motivating force. But rather than just let these layers of neuroses build up that ultimately stay anchored to her psyche, she lets them out in a rock blast of angst-driven power:
“Will she be able to keep you from driving off the edge”. There’s the sense that Tizane is moving forward emotionally and musically as the track progresses and she gains control over the situation and comes to terms with it. The rock guitar becomes her way to untether. When we hear the voice inside her head again awash with cascading guitar, there is an aggressive drum beat behind it propels her forward, preventing her from becoming lost in her emotions.
“Off The Edge – I wrote about self-worth, questioning everything… it’s all about being concerned that they have found someone better than you. I often compare myself to others as I think we all do, so I thought I’d write a song about just that”
With Tizane’s new track and first co-write we can see, hear and feel the progression in her music. Songs of lost love are commonplace but the 21-year-old artist manages to take the listener on a personal journey whilst maintaining a universality, which is a mark of her undeniable talent.
