Funk and hyper-pop collide in Tarn PK’s breakup jam.
Tarn PK – Petty
We’ve all felt a bit petty sometimes. But while it may be fun not to tell someone they’ve got spinach in their teeth, it’s not one of our best human impulses. And Tarn PK maturely eschews it on his latest track ‘Petty’, admitting ‘I don’t wanna be so petty, it’s just such a f****in waste of time,’.
Tarn PK is a New Zealand-based artist and producer, who’s already got two EPs, several singles and over a million streams under his belt. On this latest project, he’s leaned into hyper pop, citing The Neptunes and Genesis Owusu as influences.
‘Petty’ is an immediately hooky hyper-pop track dedicated to trying to handle breakups gracefully.
The wry lyrics tell a story of a relationship that’s clearly reached expiry, where both parties are trying to act cool, yet ‘teardrops come filling up’ and they both are still ‘waiting on a miracle’. Tarn PK’s vocals are stylistically autotuned yet still energetic as he admits ‘maybe we put it to bed’. The melodies are simple yet stick to the groove like glue.
The production is delicious, opening the track with an aeroplane-landing sample then kicking in with a hooky synth riff that jerkily ascends. Sharp beats and fragmented guitars add a hint of funk, occasionally disappearing into a subby, underwater space for more thoughtful moments. The vocals are stacked, layered and processed to make for some euphoric harmonies too. Fans of hyper pop and synth should definitely check this out and keep an eye out for Tarn PK’s next EP ‘Sugarcoated’, due in December.
