Sylvee’s latest release is a powerful dark pop statement that calls for gender equality.
Sylvee – Time For The Girls
‘Time For The Girls’ is the latest release from New Zealander Sarah Ryland aka Sylvee. The singer’s previous singles – ‘Retrograde World’ released in 2021 and ‘Slow’ released in August this year – created atmospheric and emotive soundscapes with Sylvee’s rich floral vocals in bloom. On her latest release, the third from her forthcoming 2023 EP, she has broken away from the serenity of her previous tracks as she announces a campaign for gender equality.
Rather than paint a picture with sonic hues and sleek production that can be appreciated at leisure, in ‘Time For The Girls’ Sylvee has created a track that demands immediate attention. The synth beats are distorted and are used like punctuation, succinct exclamation marks that create a sense of unease and impress the power of the message that she is making. “Shut your mouth, we are closing you down”. Bold lyrics that don’t pull any punches and signal an uprising.
The production has also been enhanced, with the 80’s rock drum beat that is introduced giving the track a retro feel whilst staying completely true to its contemporary motivation. The whole track feels like a rebellion, that casts Sylvee in the role of messenger heralding the dawn of this new era rather than the passive singer willing to colour her surroundings with poetic lyricism. It’s like up until now she has been projecting an innocent representation of herself, whilst behind the scenes she has been planning a coup and a shift in the balance of power, waiting for her moment to strike.
“Women have been made to feel small all their lives, and with ‘Time For The Girls’, we’re letting you know that we’re not only done with that narrative, but we’re full of power, and we’re not playing around.”
‘Time For The Girls’ is a track that can compete on the highest level with the current crop of female artists and Sylvee has a voice that demands to be heard.
