Classic RnB, hip-hop and pop combinations in SmallBoy’s latest track.
SmallBoy – Show Me You Care
‘Come and bring your beautiful self over here’ sings the bridge of SmallBoy’s latest track. Perhaps it’s a lyric we’ve heard before, but sometimes you just want some classic grooves and some seductive lines that border on cheesy. And that’s what SmallBoy delivers with style in ‘show me you care’.
SmallBoy is an artist that brings a few cultural influences with him – now based in the UK, he’s originally from the Netherlands but also has African heritage. With a slow but steady stream of releases, he cites his references as ranging from pop to afrobeats.
‘Show me you care’ is a simple yet catchy hip-hop love song, with a groove that’s effortlessly easy to get into.
The casual lyrics speak of a desire to see some real affection shown and do away with the petty grievances of relationships – ‘All these silly arguments we have, you know it’s not for me…so baby show me you care’. These are delivered in SmallBoy’s ear-friendly smoky vocals, backed up with some Drake-style autotune and some nice layered harmonies. The chorus ‘My baby you know we gon’ make it one way’ is instantly hooky as well.
With its mellow acoustic guitars and tripping basslines, there’s a hint of funk influence in the production, balanced out by the hip-hop subby bass beats and icy synths. The melodies and groove bring it all together with an RnB flavour, making a perfect balance. It’s a confident and assured track from a still-emerging artist that any RnB fans should check out.
