We have very little idea how these past few years will be viewed by history. Will this pandemic be known as an era-defining moment, or will it vanish into a mere footnote, overtaken by horrors to come? (Please, no.) But in the meantime, it’s certainly inspired a range of music, from the hopeful to the depressed to the anarchic. ‘Back Alive’, the debut single from Sinejan, is another such, and thankfully focuses on the joy of coming together again.
Sinejan – Back Alive
Sinejan is a Canada-based singer, songwriter, writer and advocate.
‘Back Alive’ is an insistent mid-tempo dance-pop track with a sweet, genuine sentiment of post-pandemic reunion.
There’s a thoughtfulness to the lyrics as Sinejan admits the benefits of isolation, singing ‘Got a taste of silence…alone was good to me, but I think I’m ready.’ Her melodies are simple and stepwise, yet effective, with the titular hook ringing ‘When the world comes back alive, I want you by my side’, all sung in her controlled, assured, ice-cool vocals, as if patiently waiting for the day ‘When friends don’t have to divide’.
The production is driven by its pounding kick beat, and owes a lot to early 2000s Eurobeat dance-pop – artists like Ultrabeat and Cascada come to mind, although this is a much less bombastic affair, a pulled back groove rather than a hammering rave. With its juddering synths and hints of chromaticism in the riffs, it’s a pleasant listen, and the sentiment seems very genuine and heartfelt. Hopefully, this opens doors for Sinejan, and we’ll see what she comes up with next.
