I’ve already talked about Saint Idiot, and my admiration of his deconstructed approach to songwriting, if you want to catch up here. There’s a lot to take in, but to summarise, it’s melodic, it’s challenging, it takes on some gritty subjects. Ok? Good. Let’s look at his next release ‘Talk’.
Saint Idiot – Talk
Slovak-Canadian art-pop musician and sound designer Saint Idiot, a.k.a Tomas Andel, continues his sound-palette approach with Talk taken from his upcoming album ‘Alternate Utopias From A Nostalgic Future’.
‘Talk’ is a lush-harmonied tribute to those magical moments that only come round once in a while; when two people truly talk and listen to each other.
Andrei reassures us in his delicate falsetto, that if “you stumble or if it’s awkward, you’re probably digging deep”, and promises “I won’t make it about me”. It feels almost intrusive like we’re listening to the soundtrack of someone else’s intimate moments.
It starts gently, a strumming guitar and echoing, spacy vocals, a music box-like twinkle in the background. But, typical of Saint Idiot, there are plenty of unexpected sounds and harmonic shifts to enjoy, constantly switching between fragility and grandiosity. With synth-organ swells, it builds to a fearless coda, with Andrei concluding “We have few healthy models for how to be…it’s up to us”, a cry for communication and healing. An audio sample from Laura La France’s ‘Conversations With Young Men’ is an apt touch too. Anyone interested in left-field music, or modern self-improvement, will find something to relate to here.
