With her new single ‘Secrets’ Phoebe Hall has released a powerful song about being in a hidden queer relationship that will hopefully inspire others in similar circumstances.
Phoebe Hall – Secrets
Despite only releasing her first single last year Phoebe Hall has already garnered support from the likes of Earmilk, Noctis Magazine, and Record of the Day. Also, her previous track, Through the Phone, got featured in Spotify’s Fresh Finds UK & IE, Spotify [PIAS]’s ‘Independent Music Monday’, and Apple Music’s ‘New in Pop’. All these achievements make clear that Phoebe is more than another average Bedroom pop act.
Phoebe’s second offering of the year comes in the form of Secrets, a Pop melody about being in a hidden queer relationship. One of the things that makes this piece shine is its upfront lyrical display, making this one of the most personal compositions in the young career of this artist.
“Secrets’ was probably the hardest one to write. I remember feeling quite drained emotionally after writing this as it explored feelings in a way I never had done before. We did a lot of contemplation when writing the record and I think I discovered feelings I hadn’t realised I felt and here it was anger around my past relationship and being hidden in it.” said the musician.
This track takes advantage of its outstanding production to recreate the frustration and confusion portrayed in the intimate lyrics. The minimal beats drive Phoebe’s sugary voice, building into a smashing chorus that finds that middle ground between catchiness and distress.
Secrets is an empowering queer anthem, exuding assertiveness and emotional intensity.
It is very gratifying to witness an artist spreading a positive message of this nature, and fortunately, Secrets is just the tip of the iceberg, Phoebe’s debut EP Runaway, set to be released in November, will dive deep into the hardships and wonders of queer love. With art of this calibre, we can only predict great things from this skilled singer.
