Upcoming indie-soul collective Peak Futures reveal their highly-anticipated space, jazz and soul-inspired debut album, Colours of the Sun.
Peak Futures Colours of The Sun
Recorded in early 2020, the group have been slowly dropping singles from the project ever since. In December 2020, they released the opening track, a cathartic retro stomper, ‘Tapestry’ which was followed in March 2021 by part one of interstellar diptych ‘Orion’, and then in April by the deeply soulful ‘Broadway’.Now, the 6-piece collective return to uncover their masterpiece in full with, ‘Orion’ (Reprise), featured as the focus track.
Made up of key players Sara De Santis (piano), Joe Bernie (vocals), Pauli the PSM (drums), Eva Brooks (vocals) and Rebecca Freckleton (vocals), each member was an established solo musician in their own right, before being united under the Peak Futures banner by founding member Chris Hills. It wasn’t long after Hills met De Santis and Bernie in late 2019 that the group was formed and the idea behind the album was conceived.
Bringing a wide range of musical talents and influences along with them, it’s no surprise then that Peak Future’s music manages to traverse a wide of genres and styles, often being unafraid to experiment with sounds, extended instrumentals or placing a non-vocal part at the forefront of a song. For Colours of the Sun, the group turned their eyes and ears to the skies for their inspiration, drawing influences from science and philosophy for the concept of the project in which they take the listener on an epic journey, that criss-crosses from the stellar to the earthly and back.
Speaking on the thought-process behind the album, Chris Hills explains:
“The space-earth-space cycle is there to echo the idea that ultimately we all come from, are created out of, the stars, and in the end, we all return to them.”
Endearing, otherworldly and thought-provoking, Colours of the Sun explores the earth, the cosmos, our place within it and or our function as we move through it. Examining the richness and detail of the state of being human is a central theme on the record, as found in tracks ‘Makes Me Wonder’ and ‘Broadway’. The album also features real-life space sounds taken from NASA, placed alongside angelic choral arrangements, alien-like synths and thrilling electric guitar solos.
Accompany Peak Futures on an epic journey to the moon and beyond, following the group through intricate and provocative narratives that capture the mind and please the ear; beginning at ‘Orion’ and ending at ‘Orion’ (Reprise), which features Pauli the PSM as both artist and drummer; bringing his laid-back, percussive flow to the track and bringing the album to an unexpected conclusion.
Speaking on the impact of the closing track, Chris Hills says:
“Like all the songs on the album, it stands out by itself but really comes to life when listened to in sequence; it’s the closing chapter. When you come back from a great journey in life you’re never the same, that’s the point the song is making – the reprise has the same backing as the original but a totally different impact,”
