Palmar Arch ‘Sunscript’. Manic alt-rock with a psychedelic twist.
Palmar Arch – Sunscript
In the opening lines of ‘Sunscript’, Palmar Arch note ‘I can see the wreck’ – a dour sentiment, but offset by the energy and manic glee of the track. Though the meaning of the title ‘Sunscript’ still remains somewhat obscure to me, the song does appropriately burn with a sort of white-hot energy. It even goes a little off-script, if you will. (Ok, I’ll stop with the puns.)
Palmar Arch is the solo project of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Robert James – regular RCM readers may recognise that Palmar Arch is the rebranded and rejigged formation of James’ previous band project, Superbloom. Superbloom garnered a notable amount of streams and airplay, and James is determined to have Palmar Arch continue that momentum.
‘Sunscript’ is a frantically driving alt-rock tune with mind-bending lyrics and a touch of psychedelia.
‘The purple-green and tangerine still dripping down my neck’, describe James with unsettling imagery. The song describes a scrambled mental state, ‘upside down and inside out’ and ‘soaking up the monsters’, all delivered in assured, confident lead vocals. There’s a pleasing sense of shape to the melodies too, even if the hectic pace does make them whizz by.
With its crunchy guitars, stomping drums and spiky little riffs, this is an alt-rock heavy track, that occasionally takes a turn into the more psychedelic with an unexpected chord or layered vocal harmony. Filled with a wild-eyed sort of glee at its own chaos, fans of high-energy rock acts such as Panic! At The Disco will find something to enjoy here.
