After their astounding headline gig at the Shacklewell Arms, the boys from Ocean Flaws are back with their catchiest toe-tapper yet.
Ocean Flaws – Zoo Doo Magic
Having had the pleasure of catching them live, it came as no surprise that this latest release would prove to be one of their greatest. Amongst the crowd at the packed-out pub, it was easy to see the band were on a victory lap, rounding out the setlist with bangers both old and new. As the show continued towards its climax, Callum announced they would be playing a new track- one that was quickly met with excitement and a renewed sense of celebration. From the first listen, I knew ‘Zoo Doo Magic’ was something special.
The moment the warm underlying synth welcomes you, Ocean Flaws once again prove their pop sensibilities. Callum’s voice carries the listener across the dreamy instrumental, never failing to produce evocative lyrics in a smoothly delivered croon. Of particular note is the bridge, wherein precisely layered vocals buoy the delivery of the starkly vivid “there is a crater down in my hometown.” Despite the upbeat nature of the instrumental, such lyrics hint towards an underlying sadness or melancholy, furthered through the following warning that “life kills easily”.
That’s not to say they don’t know when to brighten things back up. As the synth swells towards the end of the track, it is joined by a saxophone that breaks apart the aforementioned melancholy and revels in the pure joy of truly cutting loose. In these moments, Ocean Flaws expose the spirit of their raucous live performances and it’s difficult not to share in this sense of fun.
This has been something the band have continued to capture throughout their memorable music videos; with ‘Zoo Doo Magic’ offering humour and horror in equal measure. Filmed with a static camera, the concept shows Callum being covered in a variety of junk food- an experience that looks uncomfortable at best. Whether a corporate criticism or simply a fast-food frenzy, this is one video that is guaranteed to stick with you.
As the first single off their upcoming EP, Ocean Flaws have built on their previous achievements and laid the groundwork for a season of fantastic releases. With a track dropping once a month for the following three months, the band are set on a path to pop stardom. Catch them on the 14th of October at Colours Hoxton for a gig you won’t forget. I’ll be there, front and centre.
