While the internet has made it easier than ever to discover new music, the mainstream media continues to perpetuate the myth that only a handful of artists truly matter.
What about the countless musicians who toil away in relative obscurity, creating music that is no less worthy of attention and acclaim? From the folk singers playing in tiny venues to the experimental electronica producers pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with a laptop, there are so many incredible artists out there who deserve a wider audience.

There’s a whole world of music out there waiting to be discovered, and by ignoring it in favour of the same old names, we’re limiting ourselves in ways that we can’t even imagine.
Of course, it’s not all doom and gloom. There are still plenty of publications and websites out there that champion independent music, shining a light on artists who might otherwise be overlooked. But until the mainstream media is willing to broaden its horizons and recognize the diversity and depth of talent that exists in the music world, we’ll be stuck with a narrow and uninspiring vision of what music can be.
So the next time you hear someone talking about the latest chart-topping hit from one of the big four, take a moment to consider all the amazing artists who are out there creating music that’s just as worthy of your attention.
