Mighty Brother ‘Rubia Marionet’ – Gothic storytelling meets laidback indie rock.
Mighty Brother – ‘Rubia Marionet’
‘Please take a seat if you find one, fix both your ears and your eyes on, Rubia Marionet’ opens Mighty Brother’s latest track, introducing its titular character. It’s a theatrical opening line to be sure, but that’s precisely the tone – Mighty Brother wants us firmly in the land of storytelling and legend here. It’s a gamble, and not for everyone, but it definitely pays off for me.
Mighty Brother is an indie-rock group based in New Orleans, and a firmly established one, with plenty of albums, gigs and EPs under their belt. This latest release comes from their upcoming album ‘Azimuth’, which is focused around art, love, and the hero myth.
‘Rubia Marionet’ is an indie-rock waltz, with hints of funk and plenty of fantastical imagery.
The lyrics are rich in detail, telling the story of the eponymous woman, ‘tangled in emerald vines’. Though the who and why of it remain a little vague, it’s clear that this is a fairytale-like narrative of a trapped soul, ‘in her gilded cage alone’. The lead vocals really sell the storytelling here, considered and charismatic and ever so slightly theatrical, describing this Rubia – ‘her heart is hung by a thread’.
The production is a dreamy waltz, complimenting the gently tripping melodies. The mellow guitar lines sometimes surprise with funky jabs, the steady drums tie it all together, and there’s even an unexpected but welcome saxophone. An oom-pah-pah breakdown brings us briefly into a circus-y nightmare, but mostly this is a hypnotic dream. A lovely music video compliments it well too, featuring a compelling lead dancer and influences of circus, mime and burlesque. This track is a must for music fans with a soft spot for the gothic and fantastical.
