Easy breezy island-influenced pop with Luzzey.
Luzzey – Darkside
‘Visions in my head, of the nights I spend with you…’ opens Luzzey’s track ‘Darkside (Like I Do)’. For anyone hoping there’s a happy ending, be prepared for disappointment – the lover in question has just ‘moved to someone new’, and yet the melodies remove any bitterness. This is a song of bittersweet regret, not boiling resentment.
Luzzey is a London-based artist who incorporates international influences, drawing from his Guyanese, Jamaican and British heritage. With a few singles already out and some promising support act slots, he’s working towards his debut album but in the meantime, has put out this latest tune.
‘Darkside (Like I Do)’ is a simple yet effective beach-pop track of love and longing, that coasts along with style and ease.
The lyrics are direct with a heartfelt undertone – ‘I always loved you for yourself, you’re better than a trophy on a shelf’. And Luzzey’s airy yet smooth vocals slide down the ear effortlessly, as he sings the titular hook ‘I’d face the dark side of the moon, if it means I’d be with you…you know he can’t love you like I do’. The sparse production draws all the focus to the vocals and the floating main melodies, which is effective.
The production is understated, led by an acoustic guitar that one can easily imagine at a beachside. With moments of glowing synths, delayed backing vocals and beats that display both tribal and island influences, it’s a mixture that goes down easily. Fans of tropical house and RnB will take to this track right away, and although it seems more of a track for summer, it’s still enjoyable in the winter. Just turn your heating on.
