Luke Mock – ‘What You Deserve’
You can’t always get what you want, goes the old musical adage. Heck, we can’t even always get what we deserve. And in romantic relationships, at some point or another we’ll all end up in both positions – the one who can’t give enough, and the one who can’t get enough. All you can do is let go with grace – which Luke Mock does in an upbeat fashion on ‘What You Deserve’.
Luke Mock is an indie-pop artist from the state of New York. With a few releases under his belt already, he’s shared the stage with some big names as well as doing musical charitable work with youth organisations.
‘What You Deserve’ is an energetic indie-pop bop with heartfelt lyrics and lush musical layers.
‘It was the wrong time for you to walk in my life’ sing Mock’s direct lyrics to his ex, admitting fault that he ‘couldn’t find the right words’ and ‘give you what you deserve’. Still, it’s not a wholly resolved story, as he still dreams and ‘cannot help but think that you’re all I need’. This is all delivered with classic pop melodies and Mock’s husky, perfectly pitched vocal style.
The production has some nice little surprises tucked away in it – an energetic guitar riff here, an unexpected harmonic change there – which elevate it above generic pop. With its crashing beats, dreamy lead guitar lines, and warm layers of harmonies and backing vocals, it creates a good, full sound. Fans of modern guitar-pop acts like Shawn Mendes and McFly will enjoy it, but listeners may also catch throwbacks to older indie acts like REM and The Smiths. A solid slice of guitar pop, a breakup song without too much heaviness, this track will appeal to many.
