English singer-songwriter Loz Delora relays the agony of being kept awake by her own feelings on new, piano-driven, rock tune ‘Sleepless Nights’.
Loz Delora – Sleepless Nights
The single cover might give you an idea of a Nightwish-influenced metal number and, indeed, you could get that impression as the track opens with its eerie piano strumming, which complements Loz Delora’s weepy voice.
“My body will rest, but my mind will just suffer”, she goes. The piano rock instrumentation does a great job of creating a tense, near-gothic atmosphere. However, the soundscape stops just short of going that dark, and her more pop-styled singing makes the number sound endearing, rather than full-on dramatic. “I picked up a book and I tried to relax / Tried pacing my breathing”, our tormented girl relays her battle against the night for some peace of mind. The piano remains quite bittersweet all through and soldiers on in a loop, underscoring her never-ending agony.
The song was understandably written during a night of insomnia and exemplifies Loz Delora’s admitted love for confessional songwriting. She describes the process as a way to “shed light onto my thoughts and feelings not only to others, but also to myself”. Hailing from Bath and based in Guildford, she has been in a love affair with music ever since her primary school days, when she got a guitar and, inspired by artists so diverse as Pink Floyd, Linkin’ Park and Lady Gaga, started crafting her own songs. She always loved singer-songwriters with a personal tinge to their material, regardless of genre. This is the lead-off single from her yet-to-be-named upcoming debut LP. A new single is due early early Spring.
“Loz Delora’s sweet ache-laden voice couples with a dark piano-driven rock tune to relay a tale of unsolved feelings that haunt”.
