After months of anticipation, the three-piece project Lives unveils their new LP, Let Them Eat Cake.
Lives – Let Them Eat Cake
Building on two critically acclaimed singles this year—Come Together #2 and the bold, anti-establishment track Cancelled—the alt-rock band Lives, led by former The Sea member Peter Chisholm, now releases their full-length record, Let Them Eat Cake. Spanning nine tracks, this album delves into potent narratives, all set against a hard-edged sound.
The album opens with Cancelled and Come Together #2, showcasing Lives’ thematic core. Cancelled is a blistering blend of gritty guitars and powerful drums, delivering a fierce political critique—a sentiment emphasized in the music video. Come Together #2 reimagines an earlier track, displaying the band’s seasoned touch.
Building on this intensity, Is This What You Want? brings frenetic guitars and an unforgettable chorus, followed by What a Way, where Peter’s impassioned vocals interplay with fierce instrumentation and melodic harmonies.
The title track, Let Them Eat Cake, stands out with its sharp social commentary aimed at political figures. Its slow, spacious composition underscores the biting lyrics, offering a thoughtful pause amid the album’s dynamic energy.
Already Dead then shifts the pace with methodical riffs before launching into a high-energy chorus. Near the end, Hope and Freedom begins with a minimalist, guitar-driven intro, leading to a contemplative pause, only to return with a foot-tapping finish that rounds out this seven-minute track.
The album concludes with a radio edit of Cancelled and a clean version of Is This What You Want?, bringing Let Them Eat Cake full circle.
Let Them Eat Cake stands as a formidable album—bold, incisive, and unapologetically defiant in its lyrics.
Following a project as impactful as The Sea is no simple feat, yet Peter Chisholm accomplishes it remarkably. With fearless storytelling and impressive execution, he crafts an album that promises to spark conversation.
