It was an uncertain thing in May, with hints of sunshine and pockets of greenery, but now we’re solidly into June and it is undoubtedly summer. The temperature is up. We’ve put on our shorts. I begin my annual search for sandals that won’t blister me. And our taste in music becomes a little bit easier, we long for a summer tune to wash over us while we sink into an icy cocktail. And Lavinia Cos meets that need nicely, with her latest single ‘Cloud 9’.
Lavina Cos – Cloud 9
Lavinia Cos is a German pop singer-songwriter who cites her mission as to ‘inspire her listeners through her music’. RCM readers may recognise her name from ‘Cutting Ties’, her previous single.
‘Cloud 9’ is a simple and summery pop jam dedicated to living life to the fullest.
The lyrics tell a passing reference to an estrangement – ‘Loving my life now you’re out of mine’ – but are mainly focused on self-empowerment, stating ‘still gonna go, feel so free’. The lyrics have a cliched charm to them, with the chorus opening ‘Catch me on the dance floor’ and giving youthful energy with lines like ‘when I’m in my own zone, messy hair, I don’t care, I’m on Cloud 9’. Cos’ voice is smoky and assured, elevating the track, and the melodies are confidently crafted.
The production opens with a beachside-style guitar strum, then mixes a dancehall groove with some 80s influences, present in the synths, sharp beats, and even a retro electric guitar solo. Ending with a simple piano outro brings a sweet touch. It’s a track reminiscent of modern pop artists like Anne-Marie and Zara Larsson, and goes down nicely.
