In an ambitious display of dazzling musicianship, five-piece Kraken recently premiered the song Khan Market Gang, an offering with a long list of influences that pays homage to their roots.
Kraken – Khan Market Gang
Hailing from Delhi, India, Kraken is the combined effort of five musicians with different influences each, something perceivable in their engaging sound, which has elements of Rock, Hip-hop, Dance, Bhangra, Folk, and Electronic. This intriguing mixture of styles has forged a distinctive identity for this outfit.
One would think that such a combination might result in a chaotic mess, luckily that is not the case with this group and their latest track Khan Market Gang. This piece is a consistent effort highlighted by its funky guitar, contagious synth passages, and Hip-hop verses which blend astonishingly well with the traditional Indian instruments, giving life to an aural experience that needs to be heard to believe it’s true.
Aside from the mind-boggling amalgamation of genres, Kraken also takes pride in its culture and its native city. Aspects that this act always tries to include in their music, as the band expresses:
“Khan Market Gang is a song that personifies our love for Delhi, its people, and our experiences in this lonely city. And that personification happens through the eyes of 5 musicians who are not only heavily influenced both by skilfully executed rock and rap music, but also by Bhangra, Folk and Bollywood“.
Khan Market Gang is a love letter to New Delhi, delivered in a varied and rich sonic envelope.
There is so much that can be said about this composition, not only from a musical standpoint but also from a sociological point of view, Kraken has conceived a work that will make some heads turn for sure.
Khan Market Gang is part of Club Namaste, an upcoming EP by Kraken set for release on September 9th.
