Filipina-British artist, kat candace, looks back on the destructive nature of toxic relationships with her newest track, ‘grenades & guillotines’.
kat candace – Grenades & Guillotines
After taking a two-year hiatus, Katelene Sevilla, also known as kat candace, is raring to take her musical career to new heights. She has learned a lot since her debut single ‘take care’ and EP ‘Who Loves You Now,’ which she wrote and produced all on her own. She’s inspired by some big names like Grace VanderWaal, Beabadoobee, and NIKI.
As soon as you press play, you will feel like Kat is singing straight from your thoughts. Her lyrics, like ‘Swear to God, I thought you were an angel with your halo,’ hit the nail on the head about how easily we can be blindsided in relationships. And with lyrics like ‘I blame myself for not speaking up when I needed help,’ the song isn’t afraid to tackle the tough topic of self-doubt. But despite all the emotions, Kat’s gorgeous voice glides effortlessly over the alternative R&B beat, with a supporting guitar in the background. The overall texture of the track creates a smooth soundscape, paired with lyrics that will make you reflect on those draining relationships we have all settled for at some point. I find myself listening to it on repeat.
Kat found inspiration for the title ‘grenades & guillotines’ from the book “A Manual for Heartache” by Cathy Retzenbrink. The chapter “Grenades & Guillotines” talked about everyone having their own “grenade” moment in life, and Kat was struck by the idea and immediately named her song after it. “Anger can explode like a grenade, and words can cut you like guillotines,” she says. “When creating this song, I had to reminisce on my younger self to be able to write how I felt. I finished the song knowing that I’m speaking up and sharing my side of the story. Ultimately, I’m proud of myself.”
“Grenades & Guillotines is a song that fearlessly highlights the warning signs in relationships and how they may detonate a person’s emotional minefield. This track deserves a place in your heartbreak playlist.”
