Juliette – ‘Hear Me Out’

Pop-rock and pop-punk isn’t always the home of optimism. Breakup songs, nihilistic rage, and screw-the-system tunes, certainly. But there’s not a lot of looking on the bright side – so it’s a refreshing change to get a track with a fairly open-minded upbeat take on life-like ‘Hear Me Out’ does, with a chorus conceding ‘I think that I’m alright, and that’s alright with me.’ Growth! We love to see it.

Juliette is the project of Berkshire-based Nick Strong and Stephen Millyard. Having started out as a covers duo, they began releasing original music in 2019, with a debut EP released in 2022.

‘Hear Me Out’ is an accessible pop punk-rock track with heavy 2000s influence, dedicated to self-reflection and finding satisfaction with who you are.

It doesn’t live in the punk land of doom and gloom – one of the early lines sings ‘Everything’s ok, it’s been a few years now’. Rather, it’s a more mature tale of coming to terms with yourself and trying to communicate that to others. The conversational lyrics ask an unnamed listener to ‘just sit down and maybe you can hear me out’, but ultimately, they come from a place of confidence. The vocals are tuneful and sensitively delivered, backed up by layers of BVs, and the melodies are effective enough.

The production is upbeat and guitar-based, bringing to mind bands like Blink 182 and Weezer. Crashing guitars combine with thrumming basslines and high-energy drumming, showing off some impressive fills. It’s a classic sound that could work particularly well in a gig setting, getting a crowd up on its feet. An accessible track for any pop-punk fans looking for something light-hearted.
