HIGHWAYVES Refuse To Settle On ‘Things Could Be Worse’

HIGHWAYVES - THINGS COULD BE WORSE on Right Chord Music Blog

A house in the suburbs, a family, an office job… what are the consequences of living a cookie-cutter existence? HIGHWAYVES confront this head-on on their new single ‘THINGS COULD BE WORSE.’

HIGHWAYVES – THINGS COULD BE WORSE

Things Could Be Worse is an anthemic track that sees the band imagining what their lives would be like if they chose to walk the ready-made path society expects us to.

Thankfully for us as listeners, the group rejected that colourless existence and pursued their passion instead. The result is HIGHWAYVES, an artistic collective hailing from the Isle of Man. The group have their roots in the grittiness of grunge music as well as the hazy wonderlands of shoe gaze. That combination makes for a sound that feels both punchy and dreamy, driven by explosive lyrics that speak to the group’s personal experiences while also tapping into humanity’s collective unconscious.

They do just that on ‘THINGS COULD BE WORSE,’ which boasts production credits from Robin Schmidt of 24-96, a Grammy-nominated mastering engineer whose resume includes stints with the likes of Elton John, The 1975, beabadoobee, and many more. The song, which sees lead singer and lyricist Brad imagining how his future might have turned out if he had opted for a traditional life instead of chasing his dreams, is a must-listen this year for fans of alt-rock. Fans of Dry Cleaning will find something to love here.

The energetic guitar riffs and in-your-face message make the track one that is just as effective at sparking conversations with friends over a pint as it is at prompting a solo jam session on your commute home. With a driving chorus that takes aim at the maddeningly dull existence of a life someone else has outlined for you, ‘THINGS COULD BE WORSE’ forces us as listeners to ask ourselves who we’re living for — who we actually are, or for who we think society wants us to be.

With a string of solid releases this year and a strong following across Europe and the United States, it’s clear that HIGHWAYVES are already on their way to big things — and they’re just getting started.
