Good Time Locomotive take us back to the 80s with their debut single, “Lines of Symmetry”.
Good Time Locomotive – Lines of Symmetry
Radiating a forever nostalgic 80s sound pioneered by the likes of Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, New Order and George Michael, British newcomers Good Time Locomotive (GTL) are breathing new life into the new-wave scene.
Forming during the COVID lockdown with the aim to create a musically rich and eclectic sound, the band have spent the last two years crafting a style that combines the freshness of contemporary pop with the irresistible ‘throwback’ quality of older releases. Comprised of George Taylor (guitar), Hugo Leite (vocals), Bart Kowalski (bass guitar/bass synth), James Phillips (drums) and Nick Shaikh (keyboards and backing vocals), the band dip into a wide range of influences aside from 80s and 90s indie pop (Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and Dr Dre, to name a few).
Recorded in their canal boat studio, the debut single “Lines of Symmetry ” is set to be followed by two further singles and a highly anticipated EP. Opening with a mellow-toned bass riff over hazy synths, the single is the warmest of welcomes to this exciting new act. Filled to the brim with catchy ostinatos, crisp drum grooves and electronic textures, GTL achieve a zesty and rather glamorous sound.
Accompanied by a music video directed by James Phillips, the visuals are an interplay between a live performance of the band and the protagonists of the lyrics. The balance between the tale and the storytellers gives us a substantial insight into the band’s dynamic and talent as narrators. Lyrically, the song touches on the idea of turbulent relationships and the “wisdom of rekindling old flames, ” perfectly captured through vocalist Hugo’s on-screen emotion.
The concept of musical and lyrical contrast is a frame that many bands understand, but one that few bands execute well. Already at their debut, Good Time Locomotive are showing us that they can express and contrast multiple components within the art of songwriting, and do it effortlessly. A powerful, encouraging track that approaches a delicate issue, “Lines of Symmetry” is a debut that will soon have Good Time Locomotive high on everyone’s radar.
“Lines of Symmetry” is a feelgood, fun-spirited track that tackles deep, universal emotions, to depict the whirlwind experience that is a relationship. What’s not to love?”
