Little Engine is the début single from Australian contemporary folk and alternative pop artist, Cookie Baker and precedes a full length album planned for late 2015. It’s this week’s First Signs of Love featured track on RCM, and we’re delighted to say we have the exclusive first play.
Cookie Baker was raised on a farm by the seaside in rural South Australia, she quietly, yet diligently, played live to her heart’s content for ten years, amassing a modest but dedicated following throughout many corners of Australia.
Supports and festival billings alongside such esteemed Australian artists as Augie March, Kate Miller-Heidke, The Audreys, Ben Lee, Little Birdy and Gossling showcased the charming effervescence, warm, yet haunting, melodies and cool wordsmithery she had refined over those years.
With a true love for ‘the present’ and the spontaneous, thrilling nature of live performance, it took (now Melbourne/Australia – based) Cookie Baker‘s discovery of the folk, pop and country stylings of Sydney based producer and engineer, Michael Carpenter – of Love Hz Studios – to sow the seeds of what would become Little Engine.
Little Engine is a swift, driving cacophony of rhythmic resonator, layered slide guitar, sweeping vocal arrangements and pounding march-band drums wrapped around the sparkling grit of Cookie Baker‘s vocal. Close your eyes and you can actually see a steam engine winding its way down the track.
Little Engine tells the tale of the push-and-pull frustration of wanting to stand still with another, if only for a moment, and the complications that arise when two parties realise they do not have the same intentions, muddling an otherwise simple desire. They don’t ‘fit’.
The accompanying official music video can be viewed on YouTube and Vimeo from June 12 worldwide but exclusively here on Right Chord Music June 11, 2015.
Little Engine is available for digital purchase only through iTunes, CD Baby and Bandcamp from June 12, 2015. It’s taken some time for Cookie’s train to arrive, but now it has, expect a lot of people to get on-board. This Little Engine marks the start of an exciting journey for Australia’s Cookie Baker.
