Encapsulation, the latest album by Brighton based duo Dreams Of Empire, is an incredible fusion of exhilarating and tranquil sounds.
Dreams Of Empire – Encapsulation
The album combines charming dreampop with compelling indie guitar in a fun mash up of different styles. The album takes influence from a range of bands, from The Smiths, to Ride, to Lush, Mazzy Star and Drugstore.
Encapsulation was written and recorded at home, during the lockdown period of spring 2020. Over several warm weeks, Andrew Craig (songwriter, instruments) and Jane Craig (vocalist), recorded the album in their small attic studio, making the most of limited interruptions from the outside world. The subdued mood of the infamous lockdown period can be heard throughout the album. Track “Broken Hearted” deals with the reality of death, whilst “Lost Summer” beautifully addresses the heartache of being separated from the one you love.
However, the album is by no means a downcast affair. It features many wonderful and optimistic moments. “Hidden Girl” tells the tale of childhood curiosity in a house of artworks. “Broken Keys” is a surprisingly fun and upbeat break-up song.
Once Covid restrictions ease, Dreams Of Empire plan to resume live shows. In the meantime, they continue to brighten things up with their occasional, well-received, online performances.
