Hailing from Leicester, Charlie Plews is back with his first release of 2024 – ‘FALLING4U’.

Charlie Plews FALLING4U

Building on the momentum from his previous releases, Plews has swapped the acoustic ambience of his previous releases for the heavy grit of garage rock as he transforms his approach to music making.

The track wastes no time by pummeling into action. Soft environmental noises open the recording, offering an illusion of gentleness, before they are soon overpowered by the fearless roar of the pounding drums and wailing guitars. As the lyric cuts in, “She’s got dark brown hair, and ocean eyes”, you may be forgiven for thinking this is just another love song. Don’t be mistaken, this is much more exciting and dramatic.

The atmosphere builds rapidly before the climax of the chorus, brimming with hooks and melodies, as it bounces into action. The strong sense of rhythm carried throughout the track makes way for Plews to fire off quick riffs and licks into the soundwaves – this ‘edgy pop’ sensibility keeps the sound exhilarating and electrifying. Lyrically the single is equally well penned, telling the story of being ‘windswept’ and being utterly bewitched by the one that catches your eye. It’s not very often that an artist’s ‘sound change’ pays off well, but this is one of those unique, exhilarating moments.

When it comes down to influences, Plews embodies Harry Styles’ ‘Kiwi’ to give the single its dirty and angsty feel whilst retaining its pop character. It’s invigorating to hear Plews pay homage to the vintage classic rock feel, which some may argue is all but redundant in the modern music world. Reminiscent of groups like Radiohead and Muse, the record offers a cutting-edge approach to power pop which still manages to maintain the excitement and thrill typically found in classic Led Zeppelin and The Who recordings.

Charlie Plews is no stranger to music with his last release ‘After All’ grabbing the attention of Clash Magazine and BBC Introducing. The track gathered over ten thousand streams on Spotify and enjoyed its fair share of attention on TikTok before it was even released. With quality and detail this high, it’s only a matter of time before Charlie Plews is the name on everyone’s tongues.

FALLING4U is a gritty homage to classic rock, complete with a healthy dose of pop sensibility and tales of love and fortune to fit.

Speaking on writing the track, Plews comments how ‘FALLING4U’ attempts to capture the pure teenage melodrama of falling for a character who embodies the ideals of teenage angst and rebellion”.
