Bri Scully – Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl

Once known as Brianna Scully, the Los Angeles-based musician now goes by Bri Scully. Over the past two years, she has made a name for herself in the independent circuit, captivating audiences with her raw and confessional lyrics while honing her craft with each release.

Though she has only released a few songs, Bri’s determination to grow as an artist has driven her forward. In 2023, she reached a pivotal moment in her career, releasing four singles—Resist You, Haunted, Touch, and Fuck Up Your Life—each garnering thousands of plays on Spotify. This momentum culminated in the launch of her highly anticipated debut EP, MANIC, which holds significant personal and professional importance for the talented singer.

After a brief hiatus, Bri is back with Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl. This track features her signature upfront songwriting and impressive musicianship. In her own words, the song offers a satirical take on the “situationship epidemic,” inspired by a bittersweet past experience. It reflects the experience of objectifying oneself before someone else can and the struggle with surface-level connections.

Collaborating once again with producer Brandon Lew and mixed by Joey Messina-Doering—known for his work with HAIM and Carly Rae Jepsen—DWBYG  features an infectious, foot-tapping production filled with vibrant synths that evoke an 80s music vibe. While the upbeat production draws listeners in, the lyrics starkly contrast with their rawness, effectively conveying the poignant theme. This intentional blend of cheerfulness and sadness mirrors the anxiety of pretending to be happy in a superficial relationship, highlighting the emotional.

“Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl is a standout pop gem.”

Although it’s been some time since we last heard from Bri Scully, Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl makes the wait worthwhile. This track not only makes a bold statement but also serves as a worthy follow-up to her EP, demonstrating that the acclaim she has received is truly deserved and far from a fluke.
