Chicago-based goth rock duo Bellhead opens a new chapter of their journey with the long-awaited release of their latest EP, Threats.
Merging dark, brooding tones with infectious rhythms, Chicago-based dark rock bass duo Bellhead has spent recent years cementing their reputation as a captivating force in the music scene. Known for their versatile sound and mesmerizing live shows, the band features Ivan Russia on high bass/vocals and Karen Righeimer on low bass/vocals. Drawing inspiration from post-punk, goth, and industrial, Bellhead continues to evolve and redefine their sound.
So far, Bellhead has had the opportunity to tour alongside and support renowned international acts like Stabbing Westward, Clan of Xymox, Then Comes Silence, The Bellwether Syndicate, Night Club, China Crisis, Voltaire, Christian Death, Gene Loves Jezebel, and Powerman 5000.
Kicking off a new chapter in their artistic journey, Bellhead is releasing their latest seven-track EP, Threats. This project represents significant growth for the duo, both artistically and personally. While themes of mourning are present throughout, the record delves deeper than just death, exploring a range of emotions including anger, depression, denial, bargaining, and acceptance.
The opening track and self-titled Threats perfectly captures the essence of the band, blending a catchy, foot-tapping rhythm section with Ivan’s signature raspy, almost sinister vocals. This distinct vocal style is a consistent feature throughout the record, adding both intensity and character. The track builds into a vibrant, energetic chorus that sticks with you. Similarly, Heart Shaped Hole highlights the haunting vocal delivery, paired with stark, direct songwriting that cuts to the core.
Taking a more post-punk approach, Shutters + Stutters features mournful drum beats reminiscent of a funeral march, complemented by a deep, resonant bassline and a poignant chord progression. These elements come together seamlessly with the poetic, sombre lyrics, creating a haunting atmosphere.
On the next track, No Dead Horses, the duo showcases their vocal versatility, with Ivan and Karen trading verse lines over bittersweet piano melodies. The track stands out for its bold lyrical content, unafraid to venture into sacrilegious territory. This results in one of their most daring songs yet, highlighted by powerful lines like:
“God wouldn’t take me
Said ‘You’re not my Son’
Now I’m lookin’ for salvation
In a bottle or a gun”
Next, Double Jeopardy showcases the undeniable chemistry between the two musicians, with Karen delivering an outstanding performance in the choruses, complemented by a catchy guitar hook and an irresistible drum machine that lingers long after the final chord fades.
The last two tracks are a treat in their own right. First, we hear a remix of their 2023 track Bad Taste, reimagined by rock veterans Stabbing Westward. This version amps up the intensity, with frantic loops and electronic arrangements that will leave your head spinning.
Finally, the EP closes with a second remix of Heart Shaped Hole, reworked by Clubdrugs. This version introduces a darker atmosphere, with anxiety-driven production, layered textures, and unconventional arrangements that add depth and complexity to the track.
“With Threats, Bellhead deliver a project that’s dark, bold, and consistently engaging. The EP balances aggression with catchiness, demonstrating the band’s ability to grow while staying grounded in their core sound.”
