What do you think of when you hear the phrase ‘roll over’? Are you old school and reminded of ‘Roll Over, Beethoven’, or do you start dreaming of a lottery win? Whatever you think of, Avi Kytes brings a more intimate take on the phrase, with a plea to a lover to let things relax.
Avi Kytes – ‘Roll Over’
Avi Kytes is the project of London-based singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Alex Rigueiro. Having previously worked on other projects, this track marks his first release as Avi Kytes.
‘Roll Over’ is a highly accessible pop-RnB groove, combining relationship doubts with a summery feel.
The lyrics are conversational, yet show personality, with the main hook ‘Roll over, I’m getting tired of this side of your shoulder’, providing some strong imagery. They express the insecurities that normally arise in relationships, and a desire to just let things flow – ‘for a while I was in my head…we don’t need to say much.’ The melodies are effortless, and stylish yet delivered with ease. Rigueiro’s vocals are also highly listenable, sensitive and smooth.
The production centres around rhythmic guitar lines, layered with plenty of reverb, and stripped-back percussion – perhaps a nod to Rigueiro’s Spanish heritage. The track builds into a solid groove with hand claps and sprinkles of synths, and even a brass line, which avoids being too intrusive and keeps it summery. There are influences of RnB hitmakers like The Weeknd and Justin Bieber here, making it a track that goes down very easily. A strong debut for Avi Kytes.
