Ashley Barksdale – ‘C67-C2RZ’
As a title, ‘C67-C2RZ’ doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, and it’s not featured as a lyric in the song either, which is perhaps a wise choice. But it is an enigmatic choice of Ashley Barksdale’s – my assumption is that it’s a license plate, but who knows? Maybe it’s some sort of code only meant for the few to understand. But that doesn’t take away from an enjoyable song.
Ashley Barksdale is an independent singer-songwriter based in New York. With two singles already available for streaming, she’s following them up with a romantic pop track dedicated to police car chases.
‘C67-C2RZ’ is a smooth pop track, dreamy with a dose of disco, which evokes the romance of driving down the highway with your lover – even if the police are also there.
‘I don’t know where I’m going’ opens Barksdale, with lyrics that ring with classic pop youthful energy. There’s some nice imagery of the ‘pink and purple skylines’, with the chorus referencing the ‘sound of the cop cars’, complete with a sirenning ‘oo-we-oo’ hook to hammer the point home. It’s delivered with easy melodies and Barksdale’s raw, enthusiastic vocals.
The production leans into the modern disco trend, with a guitar riff that wouldn’t be out of place on a track of Doja Cat’s. With an insistent bassline and pulsing synths, and some nice reverbing backing vocals, the whole track sets up a hypnotic groove. While never quite taking off, it’s still easy to settle into. Fans of Charli XCX, Doja Cat and even the lighter side of Dua Lipa, will find something to enjoy here.
