The Anything EP by Happier? is a breath of fresh, punk air. A wave of powerful guitars and thrashing drums set the backdrop for agonisingly beautiful lyrics that mesh in a cloud of genre-defying haze. This EP is a must-listen and a perfect stepping stone for an emerging band, don’t miss out on the Anything EP!
Happier? – Anything EP
The lead into the EP on ‘If I Couldn’t Live Without You’ kicks off with a lullaby that gives the listener a false sense of comfort. Seconds later an image takes shape. The drums kick and the guitar smashes as the real sound unveils – a perfect blend of pop-punk and thrash metal. A true picture of hurt is created throughout the song and by the end you wouldn’t be a miss if you’ve shed a tear. A perfect portrait of true, unadorned love. An absolute treat of a first song. This is easily the track to come back to on this EP.
‘Anything’ keeps the same feeling and cuts deeper into an already bleeding heart, around two minutes and twenty seconds into the song there is a slight change in pace that lulls us into a hope for happier days but then we are attacked with the most powerful section on the EP – raw emotion. With the band making sure we are asking ourselves, ‘Are we happier now?’.
A gorgeous piano introduction kicks off ‘My Lover My Friend’, continuing this motion for a strong but subtle build into a smack-in-the-face chorus. The second verse is independent of everything that’s come before it and thrashes us between light, dark, love and loss with tantalising lyrics throughout.
Brace yourself for ‘Bitter’ as the pop-punk symphonies of the past are gone and it’s time for true heavy metal to reign. The raw emotion will slice through the listener and whilst you lay there questioning it all, a beating symphony of guitars and drums will safely guide you home.
‘Where Your Eyes Go’ follows a similar easy start, slowly building into a slightly more devilish end and bursting into a true pop-punk chorus. The ending is straight out of a living, walking vision with a beautifully, confusing bow tied on a truly masterful EP.
Throughout it is clear many genres are encapsulated within the EP but this is only mentioned to attract fans of all genres as this EP is for everyone and shouldn’t be boxed in.
The Anything EP is a spectacle of art and careful craftsmanship, it offers a bit of everything for any punk or metal fan with a mesh of beautiful melodies, strong lyrics and pulverising instruments. It’s an EP that keeps you guessing in all the best ways – a true hallmark of great art. I’m already excited for future projects but for now, I’ll rest easy knowing that great music is still in safe hands.
“Listeners will leave the Anything EP with three burning questions: ‘How can I see this band live?’, ‘Why am I crying and smiling?’ and ‘Am I happier now?”
