Anna Wolf’s ‘Dear Daddy’ Delves Deep

Anna Wolf’s latest release captivatingly introspects on the resentment that can come with grief.

Anna Wolf – Dear Daddy

Pretoria-born Anna Wolf was the first South African artist to win the Grand Prize at the Global Unsigned Only Competition, lauded by legendary judges such as Aimee Mann and The Cure’s Robert Smith as ‘a compelling and rare artist.’ Formerly releasing under the name ‘Tailor’, her 2012 album ‘The Dark Horse’ raked in global acclaim for tracks ‘Wolf’ and ‘Shaped Like A Gun’ after being featured on FOX’s ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ for two consecutive seasons. Despite shifting away from ‘Tailor’, Wolf has been on the scene honing her own unique sound, often described as ‘hauntingly beautiful’ since landing her first record deal at 14.

Never one to stray from vulnerability within her music, Anna Wolf states her latest single, ‘Dear Daddy’ is ‘A song for my father – the soul that taught me the most.’ Songwriting acted as an emotional outlet for Wolf to process and cope with the domestic abuse she experienced and witnessed growing up in a tumultuous household.

“Dear Daddy is enthralling and honest.”

A folkier side of Wolf’s alternative sound, ‘Dear Daddy’ is enthralling and honest. The consistent percussion and soft yet powerful vocals are mystical, accompanied by the driving, emotionally raw lyrics that deal with the feelings of resentment that can come simultaneously whilst grieving.

Recorded at the infamous Cash Cabin Studios in Nashville and co-written by Hunter Kennedy, this release fosters excitement, hopefully leading a new body of work from Wolf.

The eponymous ‘Dear Daddy Tour’ which is set to be an ‘immersive and visceral experience’ takes South Africa in April.
