Matilda Gracia – ‘Vehicles’
Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to let go of control – or in some cases, the illusion of control. On this track, Matilda Gracia exhorts us to ‘be open to receive’ whatever unexpected or wonderful things life could throw our way – and that’s something all of us could probably use a little more of.
Matilda Gracia is an artist, producer and songwriter with both Irish and Spanish roots. This track comes as the third and final single release ahead of her upcoming EP, due in May.
‘Vehicles’ is an irresistibly groovy slice of pop with a feel-good, flirty message and Hispanic influences.
Gracia addresses life and love’s anxieties with neatly penned lyrics like ‘every positive needs a negative’. There’s fun but also depth here, as she ponders that some things in life are ‘not mine or yours’ and you just have to ‘let it move through you’. The chorus lines are particularly enjoyable, singing ‘we’ve got no control, we’re just vehicles’. The melodies are fluid and well thought out, with hooks sprinkled everywhere, and Gracia’s vocals are light and airy, yet enough to hold the track.
The guitars take centre stage here, with flamenco-inspired riffs over a bouncy bassline. The beat is strong and ripe for dancing, and there are plenty of ear-candy backing vocals. The idea of having no control might be daunting, but Gracia uses this summery, upbeat track to remind you that you should let go of your anxieties, and just do whatever it is you’ve been waiting to do.
