Do you ever feel like you’re hanging on by a single thread? Find yourself reading the same line over and over again in that new self-help book that’s all the rage, so you reach for a drink instead? Alt-pop duo davvn do, and on their new single, they just want to know one thing… does anybody else?
davvn – anybody else
‘anybody else?’ is the Nashville rockers’s fourth release of 2023. The song follows the strong success of April’s “depressed in heaven” and “thanks!” as well as their viral smash hit “2002,” a collaboration with Bowling For Soup.
“Our new song ‘anybody else?’ was inspired by the overwhelming anxiety you can experience as an adult and our way of coping with it through the lens of nostalgia,” the duo says of the track.
And they do just that. ‘anybody else?’ may be a 2023 release, but one can easily imagine it reaching the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 2003. The track is inspired by 2000s alt-rockers like Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch. And davvn’s attention to detail is impeccable — the single’s artwork is a nod to Branch’s beloved 2001 debut album “The Spirit Room.”
Aughts nostalgia digs its claws deep on ‘anybody else?’ — the song is electric, addicting, and demands to be played on repeat. Millennial listeners will rave at davvn’s ability to transport them sonically back to summers spent watching Lizzie McGuire on Disney Channel, while newer generations will be swept up in a song that oozes the bubbly, pop bliss of Y2K.
The track’s guitar-driven instrumental and emotional frankness via upbeat chorus make us yearn for the sounds of the 2000s, while its candid lyrics artfully tackle the themes of loneliness, isolation, and anxiety that many of us struggle with today.
‘anybody else?’ manages to be serious yet catchy, modern yet nostalgic. All we know is that we really, really miss the 2000s. Does anybody else?
