Joey Mac knows when life gives you lemons, you can still make lemonade and that’s what she does on her new single, ‘Ferdinand.’
Joey Mac – Ferdinand
The indie folk track sees the artist coping with the knowledge that she’s in a failing relationship. But through it all, she’s still determined to look on the bright side. By lovingly caring for Ferdinand, a chilli plant given to her by a girlfriend, Joey Mac is able to see the beauty in their relationship, even as it falls apart.
Fans of Mac know her for her unique voice and energetic style of percussive guitar, two elements that make for spirited live shows and a stage presence that demands your attention. She got her start in the Sheffield open mic scene and quickly gained traction for her energetic performances. As her dedicated fan base expanded, Mac got the opportunity to play at Tramlines Festival, Y Not Festival, Green Note, and others.
2022 was a big year for Mac, who played two sold-out shows in Sheffield and London and released her first single, ‘Fun & Games.’ Now, she’s transforming her signature acoustic style into a full band sound, starting with the release of ‘Ferdinand.’
The warm track, carried by Mac’s wide-ranging vocals and signature percussive guitar, calls to mind Joni Mitchell’s stellar 1971 album Blue. But the personal subject matter of ‘Ferdinand,’ equal parts charming and heartbreaking, is what really ties the song together — and that’s all Joey Mac.
When times get hard, it can be difficult to remind ourselves that there can be good things that accompany our pain. Songs like ‘Ferdinand’ help us remember that there’s always sun behind the clouds — and to water that desk plant we bought last month.
