The Mallees have entered the building, and one thing is clear — they have something to say. The Portsmouth rockers confront the chaos of 21st-century society on their punchy debut single ‘Losing Our Minds’.
The Malees – Losing Our Minds
With its snappy riffs and strong beat, the song is every bit as spirited as early Arctic Monkeys records. But don’t be fooled by the pretty packaging — ‘Losing Our Minds’ is as much an impassioned anthem about the instability of modern times as it is an upbeat, radio-ready track.
The four-piece band, hailing from the southern coast of England, first came together in the summer of 2022 after bonding over a shared love of rock. Taking inspiration from the likes of Nirvana, The Strokes, The Smiths, and Led Zeppelin, The Mallees are set to make a splash in the Portsmouth music scene and beyond. They’ve been working with local producers Neil Elliott and Ben Whyntie at The Old Blacksmiths Studios in Hilsea on a series of singles to be released throughout the year, the first of which is ‘Losing Our Minds.’
Pulling from their own experience as young adults living through tumultuous times, The Mallees tackle important themes like mental health struggles and the abuse of power in their music. Those issues take centre stage on ‘Losing Our Minds,’ which was written in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The song is a reflection on the isolation and confusion of that time but also raises the question of what (if anything) will have to happen for our society to take action against the injustices that are causing it to crumble.
The going is tough, and it keeps getting tougher, but songs like ‘Losing Our Minds’ help ease our struggles by giving a voice to them. Be sure to check out The Mallees this week — you’ll come for the irresistible riffs, and stay for the substance.
