Rosetta – ‘Nightshade’
‘My head is growing nightshade, and it’s fogging up my real brain’ sings the titular line of Rosetta’s ‘Nightshade’. It’s an unnerving and imaginative piece of imagery, but one that hints at the real struggles of anxiety and self-doubt. Who amongst us hasn’t wished that we could weed out the corners of our brains from time to time?
Rosetta is a self-described ‘bedroom pop’ singer-songwriter hailing from New Zealand, who is finally taking the step out of her bedroom to release her debut single.
‘Nightshade’ is a gorgeous piece of indie-pop that never does too much, full of grungey wistfulness and perfect for long summer drives.
Rosetta opens the song with fairytale imagery – ‘If I had a rose every time I’d spoken out of tone, I’d have a garden…’ – which lends some whimsy to the genuine angst and remorse she seems to have about a relationship. ‘Wish I could go replay everything from that day’, she sings in mature yet heart-aching vocals. Her melodies are simple, with nothing unexpected, yet it all flows along very effortlessly.
The production centres around slightly distorted guitars, reminiscent of late 90s grunge icons like Nirvana and Alanis Morrissette. But combined with the gentle percussion and longing synth lines, it combines to create something more pulled back and dreamy than overly angsty. It’s an impressive debut single that evokes nostalgia and open roads, and fans of both the original grunge movement and the renaissance it’s had lately will find something to love here. And at under 3 minutes, leaves you wanting more.
