Born in Somerset but currently living in London, Harri Pick is here to bring a healthy dose of indie rock to your ears. Her latest track, Broke is a fine demonstration of her songwriting skills, set against foot-tapping instrumentation that will stick in your head.
Harri Pick – Broke
The origins of this newcomer started in 2016, the year when she began writing and recording her own music. Her time at The London College of Music gave her the tools to forge the musical identity that she displays today.
Her songs depict reality in a sincere way, taking advantage of her engaging storytelling to craft melodies that feel universal and empathetic, just like her new track Broke.
Explicitly raw and realistic, Broke takes a real-life situation for Harri and gives it an unforgettable soundtrack, kicking things off with an insane drum beat, which prepares everything for Harri’s bold lyrics, which are one of the most valuable assets of this piece, especially during the catchy spelt chorus.
Quite literal in its title, this song is inspired by a series of unique circumstances, starting with a visit to Harri’s parents after her birthday and the subsequent realization that she and her partner were running out of money due to living in an incredibly high-priced part of London.
What happened afterwards is a fun story that’s it’s probably better explained in Harri’s words:
“My parents had previously asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I wasn’t sure. I then had a letter for council tax and I decided to ask them for some money rather than a present. My dad was a very sarcastic man and asked how much I wanted, I said I don’t mind because I felt bad asking for money anyway haha. He proceeded to send me £1 and put Money by The Flying Lizards on whilst laughing at sending me £1. He then sent me a bit more after laughing at his joke for long enough. My partner and I then went home and used the Flying Lizards song as inspiration to create the really raw drum sound we liked”.
“Broke is a down-to-earth indie-rock gem, shining thanks to its lyrical brilliance.”
If any new listener wanted to get into Harri Pick’s music, this tune would be the ideal place to start.
