City Fidelia – Painkkiller
For this Canadian MC, there were many obstacles before making it to this point, however, this only fueled his desire to help and become a source of inspiration in his community, becoming a recognized name in his city.
This resiliency and hardworking philosophy become evident in his newest LP Painkiller, a record that in his own words, has been extremely therapeutic:
“My upcoming album is meant to be a self-imposed therapy. I explore my inner child and express the different ways my friends and I numbed the pain with topics related to growing up in a broken home, depression, love lost, but also a spiritual experience. This project is to let anybody dealing with pain know that they are not alone.” said the rapper about the album.
Something worth recognizing is Luigi’s sincerity showcased in his rhymes, not holding back when it comes to important topics, like in the single Can’t Sleep (featuring Hip Hop artist FNR Davinci), where he takes a shot at police brutality, highlighting the unfortunate case of Eric Garner.
Or in the highly infectious banger College Dropout which is pretty much a counter to the negative stigma around dropping out of school to pursue a different path in life.
In some others, he dives deep into the battle with his demons, like the jammer Liquid Courage and its impactful discourse on alcohol through Luigi’s personal experiences.
The track Close Call is a rapped narration of two short stories that were a “close call” for Fidelia.
While Soulmate working as a more traditional and romantic Hip-hop, R&B-infused song with the participation of Atlanta rapper Shelley FKA DRAM, bringing some soulful vocals into the mix.
Another aspect to mention is the colourful production, which can go from being soothing and relaxing, exhibited in melodies such as Therapeudick and Take Care, to more energized beats and rhythms, like the ones in the previously mentioned tracks College Dropout and Can’t Sleep, demonstrating the versatility of this LP.
Painkiller is captivating storytelling wrapped in cutting-edge production and immaculate flow.
In short terms, Painkiller is a profound exploration through the mind of Luigi Fidelia, his fears, hopes, dreams, traumas, struggles, and memories, all together in 15 enticing tracks that will leave you asking for more.
