After the warm reception of his first single Postcard Summer, Matteo Zandonella Bolco aka The Golden Hour has shared the album Lives Like The City, a work shaped by the experiences of this artist, with an honest, authentic view on life and its many ups and downs.
The Golden Hour – Lives Like The City
Of course, in terms of production and instrumentation, this album delivers spectacularly with its incredible Synth-pop sound working as a nice throwback to the 80s. However, the most valuable asset here is brilliant songwriting. Matteo has poured his heart and soul into this work, exploring themes of belonging, love, and remembrance, putting you in the driver’s seat of this odyssey.
The opening track, Eyes Wide Open, is a short instrumental piece with retro synths that gives us a small taste of what’s next to come, followed by the previously mentioned Postcard Summer and its nostalgia-charged sound.
There are fascinating elements throughout the course of this work, like the hazy and delicate vocals in Your Surrender, conveying pure, unfiltered love within its lyrics, or the extraordinarily pleasant saxophone in the tracks Mysterious Love, The Dance, and Home, the latter dealing with the idea of finding a place to belong.
Others shine due to the clever lyricism, like Memoirs of a Future I with its paradoxical title, which feels like a letter Matteo wrote for himself, connecting past and present, exuding emotion on a deeply personal level.
Fading Lights illustrates the feeling of having to leave everything behind and move forward, a recurrent incident in Matteo’s life due to his father’s job, forcing them to change residence often.
Stockholm Syndrome is another instrumental composition that works as a very convenient interlude with only a minute duration.
The New Tomorrow is a declaration to start over again, leaving the difficult moments in the past and aiming for what lies ahead, giving a proper closure to this compilation of songs.
From the artwork to the melancholic-fueled sound, Lives Like The City is a well-rounded homage to the 80s, filled with memorable moments.
The Golden Hour has developed an engaging LP that perfectly fits with the overall aesthetic of the 80s and retro wave. So give this work a shot and lose yourself in its absorbing production and intimate lyrical passages.
