With their first single in a while, Cultures return with their pleasing brand of radio-friendly rock.
Cultures – If I Could
The airwaves seem a little empty of rock bands at the moment. Pop, hip-hop, dance and singer-songwriters all have healthy representation in the charts, but there’s not many groups with guitars to be seen. And yet, judging by live tours and gig line-ups, the demand is there – and if you’re missing a bit of bands in your life, come and check out the latest Cultures release, ‘If I Could’.
Cultures are a Manchester-formed three-piece, who after a quiet year are planning to hit the ground running, starting off with their single ‘If I Could’.
‘If I Could’ is a shimmering soft-rock anthem, understated yet deceptively compelling.
The crafted yet not-too-specific lyrics speak to a worn-out loved one – ‘without the voices in your head it feels lonely’ – with some stark imagery thrown in – ‘you drove all night to where you grew up’. Lead singer Josh Spivey’s melancholy vocals carry the track, leading to the titular refrain, ‘I’d carry you if I could’. With its gentle yet coaxing melodies, this is a song dedicated to those who are feeling down, or stuck in their lives, and those who love them.
The tripping lead guitar lines, thrumming bass and driving beats put the track firmly in the indie pop/soft rock world, reminiscent of bands like Snow Patrol, Coldplay and the Foo Fighters. The band is clearly a tight-knit group of musicians. It’s a highly radio-friendly track, and one that I can imagine would work very well live. And with Cultures lining up a series of shows in Manchester and beyond, that opportunity may come sooner than we think.
