Lissy Taylor’s latest release is an air-punching, heady mix of lust and power with a licence to thrill.
Lissy Taylor – She’s A Stunner
‘She’s A Stunner’ is the second release out of a planned four for Lissy Taylor in 2022. In May, she released ‘Young’, a song pitched at “dream chasers and those with a juvenile heart” which made BBC Introducing’s Record of the Week back in her hometown of Stoke.
The singer-songwriter’s latest offering – produced by Gareth Nutall (Frank Turner, Lottery Winners, The K’s) – is a wash of lavish guitars and compelling vocals that beats with a country heart driven by a shimmering indie groove.
The song is all about female empowerment, vitalised through the exploits of a femme fatale “with looks to kill and set hearts on fire”. Backed by a simple drum beat and strumming guitar, Taylor lists off the attributes that characterise this alluring ‘Villanelle’ type figure in a sultry, lingering, Americana style vocal: “You’ll remember the smell of her perfume, the second she leaves the room”. As the guitars start to gather momentum, riffing headlong into the chorus, Taylor’s vocal is elevated into Stevie Nicks’ ‘Edge of Seventeen’ territory – powerful and persuasive.
Just like the temptress of the song, who exudes control everywhere she goes and in everything she does – “She’s a whole scene so picturesque” – so Taylor’s vocals are the dominant force throughout, flowing without resistance through the wall of sound that builds up around her.
“I wanted to vibe that strong powerful women are sexy; I’m bored with the damsel in distress narrative it’s overdone”.
‘She’s A Stunner’ proves that Lissy Taylor is kind of a big deal in this industry.
